Lasg Marks A Decade of Tree Planting

  • Plants 6.8 million trees in ten years

The Lagos State Government on Friday marked ten years of sustained commitment to tree planting campaign which has earned the State national and global recognition.

In his welcome address at the 10th Tree Planting Day, the Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, said that a total of Six Million, Eight Hundred and Thirty-Four Thousand, Nine hundred and Thirty-Eight trees had been planted statewide.

Adejare said that the theme for this year’s campaign which was ‘Think Green, Plant Trees, Live Green’ “not only reechoes our determination to populate our State of Aquatic Splendour with trees and reclaim its old glory of greens but also inculcate in Lagosians the habits of tree planting”.

The Environment Commissioner emphasized the importance of trees to human existence. “Trees play a major role in our lives and in the preservation of the environment. It is a fact that trees complement healthy living, purify the air, prevent erosion, combat flooding and desertification among other benefits to humanity”.

He urged Lagosians to stop indiscriminate felling of trees and advised them to approach LASPARK should it become necessary to fell or relocate trees

His words: “I want to reiterate that it is an offence in Lagos to cut or fell trees without the permission of LASPARK. In case you are compelled by development and other viable reasons to fell or transplant trees, ensure you get in touch with LASPARK which has been equipped to handle such situations”.

Dr. Babatunde Adejare, also said, the 10th edition of the Annual Tree Planting Campaign was a landmark environmental regeneration programme of the State Government.

The Commissioner noted that the Government of Lagos State was appreciative of the reality of the importance of trees to humanity and has remained in the forefront of environmental regeneration through its commitment to the proliferation of trees and green areas in the State.

Adejare urged Lagosians to embrace the tree planting exercise of the Government and make it part of their lives. “Let us all embrace tree planting and make it part of us. For instance, it is advisable to cultivate the habit of planting trees during landmark events such as Birthdays, Burial and Naming Ceremonies among others.”

The Lagos State Government has set aside July 14th to commemorate the Tree Planting Campaign statewide.
